Emergence of Religion

  • In the sixth  century BC religion and social movements emerged not only in India but in the entire world  Mahavir Swami and Gautam Buddha in India, Confucius, La -Otse in China, Pythagoras in Greece and Zarathushta in Iran, eta emerged
  • In this period, philosophers spread philosophical ideas and propagated truths and religion, opposing the evils, hypocrisies prevailing in the then society
  • This period was a period of philosophical thought and research which is also called the period of intellectual movement.
  • Factors responsible for the rise of new religions after later vedic period :

    6th century B.C.E. was a period of religious movement.in India. There were several factors which contributed to the social upheaval of that period.

  • The irregularities (caste, injustice and rigid practices) in the existing social and religious systems were exposed and there was a growing awareness about the drawbacks in one’s own culture, and it led to the growth of new religions.
  • Complications in the Vedic religion : In the beginning, vedic religion was very simple. The Aryans worshipped nature. Religion was not costly and there were sacrifices. Later, due to the influence of priests, a number of rigidities started to grow. People got dissatisfied and they wanted changes which they found in the new religions. The primary cause for the rise of Jainism and Buddhism was the religious unrest in India in the 6 th century B.C. Superstitious beliefs and mantras confused the people
